The Padua Theatre
Located in Brunswick, the Padua was a beautiful, art deco style theatre. It was built and operated by Hoyts during the golden era of cinema. It was opened to much fanfare on 24th July 1937, screening an Errol Flynn movie, the Charge of the Light Brigade.
It featured a Hammond electric organ and bandstand which were on a revolving stage. When the stage moved, it revealed the screen. Stage shows also featured as part of the film programme.
The Padua was also a paragon of modernity, complete with a streamlined egg shaped ticket office, footwarmers, valet parking and even a crying room for babies.
As with all the cinemas of this era, the Padua suffered when TV came along, so much so that it was closed by Hoyts in June 1968. The property was sold, and leased to Tony and Franco Zeccola. Its superb Art Deco interior was gutted, and they reopened it in August 1969 as the Metropolitan, screening Italian films. It continued to operate until December 1981.
The building then sat vacant. It fell into disrepair and was vandalised. Sadly, it was demolished in February 1982. Non-descript shops, were built on the site, replacing the imposing Streamline Moderne edifice that was the Padua.

I find this so fascinating even though its a few years before I was even born. Everyone looks so much more visually appealing, and so much more individual attention to their personal appearance. The general impression is the entire city is at a wedding. Today most people look so scroungy and the tattoos and facial jewelry is kinda orc-like, heh. I've often felt that society is in decline, its a very strange phenomenon and it appears to be worldwide. Even the buildings we live in, the cars we drive and the art we portray ourselves with, these are all getting simpler and uglier. Its very strange.

THIS informed my entire life. How could that be, except for a movement so cataclysmic, that a nine year old child living in the forest of the Pacific Northwest would be shaken and stirred forever by that which has no definition? Somehow, that has been my life.

People were well dressed, far more dignified. When i was a kid in the 70s my Mum would take me in on the train from Auburn Station and we'd come out Flinders Street via the Degrave Street subway. There was always a man in a wheelchair selling the Sun or the Herald. From there, it was three arcades two Burke street Myers. . These days one of them is gone. I loved that walk. Lunch was at the Coles Cafeteria or Myers, but Coles was famous with the ladies in yellow uniforms and tiaras. Australia was a much more cohesive society then. Thats the nicest way i can put it.
